Tour de iditarod

In the shadows of Chicago’s Soldier Field looms a sleepy man-made peninsula called Northerly Island, home to all sorts of birds, rabbits, foxes and other wildlife. The history of Northerly Island is interesting to me. Alder Planetarium sits at one end, and at one point an airport existed on the island. Now hiking paths wynd through native vegetation nestled against the cold Lake Michigan waves. I spent a few hours there recently and enjoyed walking around, even finding some untouched snow.

I also met a group of folks from Free Spirit Siberian Rescue who were running a pack of dogs there using a dog “sled” that actually had wheels because much of the snow at the time had melted too thin. I snapped a photo of Jason Husong zipping past as he is pulled by a team of Huskies.
