Shumpert returns

Spent part of a recent day with Georgia Tech student athlete Iman Shumpert, who was in town taking part in a basketball camp as an instructor. Shumpert plays point guard for Gerogia Tech’s basketball team and is a graduate of Oak Park River Forest High School. He shares a laugh here with a pal as he retraced some of his old stomping grounds, including the basketball court at Longfellow Park.

  1. You’d be surprised (or not) how much opposition basketball courts get in Oak Park, but the Park District bravely continues to support kids that want to play hoops. Someday, they could grow up to be Iman Shumpert.

  2. What issues do the people who oppose basketball courts in Oak Park have? I’m not the smartest guy, but I’m guessing it has something to do with the character of a lot of the young men — or at least mostly young men — who come to these courts.

I can also speculate that most people are too afraid or intimidated to express exactly why they don’t want courts near their homes.

  3. That’s it in a nutshell. In true Oak Park style, the arguments usually center on other related issues. To be fair, basketball usually produces more of a disturbance than say 5 year-olds playing t-ball.
