The last of Cabrini
There really wasn’t much to photograph and I was on a pretty tight deadline so I couldn’t stay for more than a few minutes, but when the last building of possibly the most famous public housing development in the country is torn down, it’s big news and worthy of a blog entry.
Demolition of the last Cabrini Green building still standing began early this morning. Cabrini was built in the 1940s and once housed 15,000 people. It eventually became synonymous with gang violence and neglect. For several years crews slowly razed buildings there and residents were displaced. Now big box stores are positioning for the opportunity to build there. Million dollar condos are rising all around.
A wrecking ball was doing most of the work today, and most people on the site were journalists or documentary film makers who stood and watched as the process got underway.
