Stars, stripes and perfect timing
I had plans for more than a week to photograph an event featuring an American flag recovered from the wreckage of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Then came Sunday evening when we all learned the news that Osama bin Laden, the man responsible for the terrible act of terrorism that day, was killed during a military raid by United States forces in Pakistan.
The flag was long scheduled to arrive at Edward Hines VA Hospital in Maywood Park Tuesday morning, but given the recent news that swept the world a day earlier, it took on obvious added significance. Every media outlet in town was there it seemed. Here are a few shots of various police officers, firefighters and military who took part in the event.
The flag was badly damaged during September 11, and eventually it was decided additional American flags would be stitched to it to make it whole again. The flag is making stops all around the country where stitches are sewn in and it will return to the site of the World Trade Center for the anniversary of the attacks.
